1930: Manhattan to Managua, North America’s First Transnational Automobile Trip.

ORDER NOW!

On March 23, 1930, the Lyon brothers, Arthur and Joe Jr., who would later become famous entrepreneurs in Nevada, began their epic journey from Manhattan, New York, to Managua, Nicaragua, in Arthur’s 1929 Model A Ford Roadster. Though they had only $324 between them and they spoke little Spanish, they pressed on relentlessly despite all odds. They completed their amazing 4,562-mile trek in 54 days.

Their story is edited and introduced by Larry Lyon, the brothers’ nephew.  The story features 68 illustrations, annotated commentary by geographer Denis Wood, and Sally Denton’s conclusion. 1930: Manhattan to Managua, North America’s First Transnational Automobile Trip is sure to become an American land classic.

A portion of the proceeds from the sales of the book will be donated to Michelle’s Place for cancer resource and awareness in Jenn Lyon’s name.

The Ones Who Made it Possible

THE ADVENTURERS

THE LYON BROTHERS, ARTHUR LYON & JOE LYON JR.

Arthur and  Joe Lyon were born in the mining camp of Pearl, Idaho, in 1904 and 1909 respectively. In 1911, the family moved to the mining camp of National, Nevada, near McDermitt in northern Humboldt County, Nevada. In the twenties and thirties, they were engaged in the trucking business based at McDermitt and Winnemucca, Nevada. In 1935, they pioneered the Boise-Winnemucca Bus Line, which they operated until 1946.

For a number of years, the Lyon Super Service Station formed the center of the family’s business ventures. Joe Jr., who eventually became an accomplished automotive engineer, took a special interest in the mechanical aspects of the family business and Arthur took an interest in the financial side in the family company.

THE INSPIRATION

JENNI LYON, SURVIVOR PALAU 2004 SEASON

Larry’s daughter, Jenni, knew how important to him was to have this book published, which was made clearer when Larry found, after her death from breast cancer in 2010, a “wish pillow” containing a note written by Jenni stating her wish that the book would be published and made into a movie with her in the female lead role.

This wish, along with her indomitable spirit during her struggles with cancer, gave Larry the strength and courage to persist.  Larry plans to donate a portion of my proceeds from sales of the book to cancer awareness, research, and support in her name.

THE EDITOR, AUTHOR AND NEPHEW

LARRY LYON

Larry Lyon is the nephew of Joe and Arthur Lyon. Larry was born in 1947 in Reno, Nevada, and he grew up in Reno and Boulder City, Nevada. He completed his B.A. in psychology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and his M.S. in experimental psychology and Ph.D. in clinical psychology, both at Washington State University.

Since 1979, he has worked in the mental-health field in a variety of settings, including nineteen years in private practice in The Dalles, Oregon. Lyon currently works for the Veterans Health Administration in Las Vegas. He resides in Boulder City, Nevada.

THE BOOK’S REAL AUTHOR

ARTHUR LYON

While Joe Jr.’s proficiency laid in the mechanical aspects of the business, Arthur honed his financial acumen through the family company. It was learned by his nephew Larry that Arthur prepared his father’s first-ever income tax statement. Arthur and Joe Jr. were involved in numerous business ventures, some of them involving mineral rights claims.

This book is based on 308-page typewritten and illustrated “transcript” that Arthur had written decades ago. Central America through a Windshield was Arthur’s account of the amazing journey he and his younger brother, Joe, had taken in 1930 from Manhattan to Managua in their 1929 Model A Ford Roadster.
